This may be the strongest case for authoritarianism: https://www.noahpinion.blog/p/how-liberal-democracy-might-lose Basically: the war for people's hearts and minds has no stable equilibrium except local hegemony of one dominant elite, much like (and for the same reasons as) what Hobbes pointed out for regular war.

I don't like the article right from the get up because Noah is wrong. He was raised In a liberal democracy that defeated authoritarianism yet 35% of his income is taken from a barrel of a gun to pay for socialist causes. Communism is dead? Poppycock. Capitalism and socialism don't exist. They're spooks. hence "hybrid". All that is are markets, and how freely you're allowed to use them A true Democracy means that the crowd can determine tax rate on market In practice we have criminal democracies where political elites choose the tax rate. all based on violence

Sure if it isn't coercive, but a "liberal democracy" is coercive. You're forced into it by birth your neighbors decide how much of your income is stolen from you. They can even force you to get a vaccine or be exiled/imprisoned.

The worst is authoritarianism without any pretense of socialism. And that is the majority of authoritarian states throughout history.
