i went to a small open-air observatory in the texas hill country a couple months ago and the resident astronomer taught us the subaru logo is based on the Pleiades (Seven Sisters) star cluster. apparently the cluster has been variably perceived as 6 vs 7 stars by different people at different times, with various lore/mythology around the dimmer, not-always-visible "sister."
