How so? I would have thought it to be more related to the cost of raising a kid combined with more education and resources about family planning and contraception?

Yeah and internet as the driver of that improved education and resources especially in poorer countries. Internet opened the world to millions of people and gave them access to free* information otherwise hard to share.
