You don’t have to suck off canonical American literature that you are told to suck off. You can question why tf some guy is writing about a dead baby tree. Just don’t be surprised when other writers don’t like you (they can go read some Don Delilo about it)

I liked it but totally get your viewpoint. It’s a challenging read and a downright slog at times. Could tell there was a lot of allegories and symbolism, so had to look up some third party analysis to get a better appreciation for the book as a whole. I don’t remember the baby tree 😆 Definitely not a “must read” in my opinion. Wouldn’t even be the first Cormac McCarthy book I recommend to someone. Think it’s one to considering checking out if you’ve read one or two of his more approachable novels and enjoyed them. But I totally agree you don’t have to suck off canonical literature that you are told to suck off. I think The Catcher in the Rye is pretty lame
