Everyone cheering for Canada to become the 51st US state should know that the single uniting piece of Canadian culture is “not American”. It might sound tongue-in-cheek but it’s deeply entwined in our history. It’s hilarious/sad that Canadians are like this but it’s one of the only things we all agree on. I’d bet most Canadians would take a lower standard of living than capitulate to becoming American (with the possible exception of Albertans).

I feel like, it’s nonsense to have Canada become the 51st state. On the one hand it feels like a joke, on the other posts like above can begin to be spun in such a way that people will side with it. I feel like we all need to take a moment to just sit down and chill out. Canada is neat, but I’d rather it still just be Canada.

Trump has made statements in the past that people said were jokes but then when he actually implemented them, people lined up behind him. This is how Trump tests the waters. He’ll act like it’s a joke and then do it if people seem to vibe. This is how you permanently damage trading relationships. Canada and the US have so much in common, but this trade war highlights everything different about us.

Agreed. And it’s ultimately so sad. Now people are Justifying the fact that everything is about to get even more expensive than it already is, and we’re (Americans) are just supposed to believe that it’s okay. It’s not okay. None of this is okay. I still stand by Canada being just that, Canada. And I don’t mean that in a bad way. Imperialism does not get anyone anywhere. The fact that we’re even having this discussion is just sad. All of this is just outlandish at this point.
