Social accounts have worth to pump certain messages, especially with credible/older accounts. When I was working at a marketing agency (loooooong ago), we had an outside connect who had a bot army that would engage our campaign content on Facebook and Twitter, which we would then report to our clients to show how our work was better than competitors. This was an open secret…but eventually found its way on SoWs as a line item. The dude offered me a couple of hundred bucks for a pretty old Reddit account I had.

This is it, building history is hard and we socially constructed it to be valuable. If it's cheaper to start fermenting plausibly active accounts today than to buy them for a couple hundred bucks in a couple years, then this is what we get. IMO the real problem is putting too much value on history, which we keep doubling down on.
