It seems like Trump is genuinely trying to destroy the Canadian economy and might even be serious that the goal is forcibly annexing Canada. He said he’s “not expecting any concessions”(?) and now wants to “get rid of that artificially drawn” border between the two countries. These tariffs are predicated on a nonexistent fentanyl influx from Canada to the U.S. People I know in Ottawa are genuinely alarmed and think this is for real.

Had a ton of people say, “he’s not serious about Canada being a 51st state”, but when he takes actions like this Canada has to take it seriously. And north of the border we know the American people elected him to do exactly this, so we aren’t really feeling friendly right now.

Slight correction: *some* of the American people…

Voter turnout at almost record highs and 50% voted for these tariffs via Trump. It’s enough that as a Canadian I feel like I can say America no longer sees us as a close ally.

as an American voter, I can honestly say we didn't think this was what we were voting for. I actually would have thought we'd send troops into Mexico to "control the border" before we'd send troops to Canada to make it *checks notes* one state??? Like for reals, is it going to be East Alaska, or North Maine, or North North Dakota?
