i worry that the reason why decentralized social has yet to really take off is because the average person doesnβt really care about making money from their content. most people I know are more than happy sharing their random life moments to their private IG account with sub 1000 followers.

I think the thing that hits most is if they want to leave a platform, say because of politics, AI policy or whatever. Building a following or curated IG for years only to walk away is a hard choice that's solved by decentralized social. But most won't think about it until it's too late.

yea thatβs fair, although I think my main point is that the average person doesnβt really care about building a following or having a curated feed. the top 1% do but if they already have tens of thousands to millions of followers, the switching costs are also much higher

Totally accurate for average folks. That bar is pretty low lol. But, there is a segment of people between average users and top 1% that I wouldn't consider "creators" that do care about the quality of their feed. Particularly on platform like IG. And also skewing younger. Switching cost is a huge issue to bring the big guns over though. I saw an interesting post on the migration to Bluesky after the grok fiasco yesterday that's related. I'll dig it up.
