1/ The Variant team had a great time at Farcon 2024! It was awesome to meet and hang out with so many amazing builders and see how the Farcaster ecosystem is taking shape. 

Here are a few of our main takeaways from the event, and what we think it says about the state of the ecosystem in 2024:

Farcon reminded me of Devcon 2017.

Small group of mostly devs with optimistic energy around composability.

Devcon 17 was about tokens/SCs/crowdfunding as new primitives for all kinds of apps

Farcon 24 was about identity/money/data/groups as primitives for new social apps

Exciting bc dev optimism breeds action

2/ Developer optimism is high, and this was palpable at Farcon. Builders are excited about experimenting with new functionalities and leveraging Farcaster’s growing user base as an initial starting point for adoption.

3/ At the client level, competition is heating up, with more founders building apps that cater to diverse user needs and preferences (media-centric to transaction-centric, to others).

4/ One particular functionality that is seeing a lot of attention is transactions: builders are looking to facilitate transactions whether for payments, tipping, minting, or something else, to enhance user engagement and lean into what crypto enables.

5/ I wrote recently about memecoins and scenecoins as a new GTM strategy. I met multiple founders who told me they’re embracing this strategy (with success!), recognizing the power of memes and internet culture to drive adoption.

6/  It was great to hear directly from the Farcaster team (@dwr.eth and @v) about their vision for the platform over the coming year. We’re excited to see them doubling down on crypto natives, focusing on the things that traditional social can’t do.

Farcon energy in 2024 really reminds me of Silicon Valley or SXSW 10 years ago:

- techno-optimistic
- generous / pay it forward
- default trust
- everyone willing to chat and meet with anyone bc we're all 1-2 hops separated 🥹
