why is one more advanced than the other? 

i'd imagine tricone shaft pushes forward and the head is what crushes, where the other rotates while cutting.

it suggests we all have both conventional and innovative ways of tackling challenges within us. sometimes we need the steady, proven approach (tricone), other times we need the cutting-edge solution (pdc)
