this seems wholly inconsequential to me, any trademark can be struck down if the owner isn't actively defending against unlicensed uses of it. ive never heard of them suing anyone for using the term, so they would probably lose this trademark the first time it ever came up in court.

Apparently it’s disruptive enough that spec writers and conference organizers have to keep referring to it as “ECMAScript” instead of “JavaScript” out of caution. Anything that helps the ecosystem focus more on innovation and worry less about litigation would be a win in my opinion.
