What if the old man is actually Rick’s father? Feel like Tim has to do something heroic/martyr like to compete the Buddhist circle of life theme.

Yes to both. It seems clear to me that the old man -- Jim Hollinger -- is likely Rick's father since all Rick had was his mom's name, not even his allegedly slain father's name.
