Rare pearlescent clouds in the sky over northern Sweden. Polar stratospheric clouds form when temperatures are unusually low at altitudes between 15 and 25 kilometers. The pearlescent effect is caused by the refraction of light from the sun that has already set below the horizon. Author: Vojan Höfer
