The "hole" in the NGC 1999 nebula (second image). For a long time, it was believed that the dark area was a dense accumulation of dust that did not allow visible light to pass through. However, it is now believed that it is really just a void - a hole in the nebula, probably punched by jets of young stars. The nebula itself is both emission (it emits itself) and reflection (it reflects the light of stars). In the first image, you can clearly see how the star illuminates the matter.
