This evening I was putting my son (almost 4yo) to bed, and as I do sometimes, I got a little stern. He wouldn’t stop taking his pants off and I didn’t handle it well. Later as I sat next to his bed and held him he said “Daddy you need to be nice to me. You didn’t make me feel good, and you’re my friend.” Holding back the tears I said “You’re right. I’m sorry I wasn’t nice to you, I’m going to try harder next time.” I think about how badly I wish I was able to do that with my dad. He had some anger issues, but our way of handling it was just hiding away somewhere. I’m incredibly thankful I’ve learned how to express my feelings, confront people I love, and that my wife and I have been able to teach that to our kids. I say all this as an encouragement. You will fail, and perhaps in some areas of your parenting you won’t be much better than your own parents, but you can change the course. You don’t have to keep the generational status quo.

I'm looking for a response that communicates "ok banger" but in a heartfelt, appreciative way. Damn.
