Help me understand: isn’t solar a dead end? The sun doesn’t always shine, we need to 10,000x our battery capacity to run the world on solar, and we’d be strip mining the Earth for those battery metals. Nuclear is the only way. Obsession with solar only furthers oil (see Germany).

Nuclear is good for base load. But US has more than enough sunshine. Other countries, not so much.

But batteries. We are nowhere near the tech for enough capacity, and we’d be significantly strip mining to get to that capacity.

I guess it’s supplemental to nuclear. But so much energy is going into solar and it doesn’t matter until we get scaled nuclear.

Elon seems to think solar + batteries works and his track record with applied engineering around basic physics is pretty good.

They are getting just as cheap! The strip mining thing is FUD. We're getting better at finding new deposits, extraction, etc. https://caseyhandmer.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/image-7.png https://warpcast.com/dwr.eth/0x3eb3fe4e

Late to this but there's ways of storing energy like "gravity batteries" that would massively reduce the need for everything being stored in traditional batteries https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_battery https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/01/world/water-battery-switzerland-renewable-energy-climate-scn-hnk-spc-intl
