GTE raised $10m to build the fastest decentralized exchange and the first onchain order book. But from my understanding there's a simple reason why that is extremely difficult by just parallelizing the EVM. That is, Long transaction dependency chains in DeFi applications and protocols. For example:

In this example, Parallelization doesn't help complete the whole transaction much faster as each of these steps will a) Still be in different blocks b) Depend on the previous step to be completed i.e. No flash loan from Aave, no swapping borrowed USDC into ETH. TLDR: The entire system is still hindered fundamentally by speed constraints of Block-based processing.
