An anti-war masterpiece: Third of May 1808, Francisco de Goya (1814) Napoleonic troops executing Spanish rebels during the French occupation. The rebels - a Christ-like figure in white; state - faceless mass of soldiers. There’re no heroes there. Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid

Have a special affinity for Goya and his fearless grappling with the grotesque.

His dark period is really dark! It doesn’t translate at all in pictures. All these motives and figures are horrifying

Totally, I think artists sometimes delve into this darkness to hold it up as a mirror to the world. Look what horror we have wrought. And thereby neutralize hatred or violence and bring us back to a place of connection. This is the hope

Totally. Goya was reveling the truth but people didn’t want to look at it. His illness and becoming deaf totally changed his art
