The idea of Silver Lake. Shake Shack opening up on Sunset (and then closing) was as a really bad real estate move. But here’s what is interesting. I don’t think it was an overestimation their brand value among hipsters and artsy types. They knew that Silver Lake has become a concept more than a physical place. A concept that sucks in tourists flocking to see the Williamsburg of the West. Said tourists are more than happy to eat at Shake Shack. So this is less about Shake Shack and more about this illusion of a neighborhood. Most starving artists left Silver Lake over a decade ago. It’s now a place where rich people who dress like creative types own homes. And, tourists wanting to feel like they’re experiencing the NPR-listening cultural pocket of the city. Anyways, good riddance Shake Shack.
