IMO the broad concepts behind “woke” is a direct response to the ruthless suppression of any pursuit of any semblance of economic equality. Both major parties in every anglophone country have accepted the neo-liberal notion that if you are successful you’ve earned it, if you’re suffering you deserve it. In all circumstances your own agency is supreme, whatever happens in your life is on you. Now that this discussion has been successfully pushed out of the room by the right, the only way the left can distinguish itself is through this culture war. People are angry about soaring inequality and declining social mobility and the only avenue for airing this intense emotion are debates on social issues and the gripes of marginal groups because there is consensus between political parties on the current economic paradigm, even though it’s failing a substantial portion of the population. 1/

Ironic that, listening to MoZ and Pirate Wires, this culture war stuff is the biggest bug bear of the technocratic right and yet they’ve essentially created it by refusing to allow oxygen to a debate over what degree of economic stratification is acceptable in society. So if our civilisation is indeed committing suicide, it’s a team effort. 2/2
