Was asked today: “How do you know what to plant in your garden?”

Such a good question. Such a long answer. The short version is, a blend of practicality (environmental conditions), functionality (some to eat, some to serve as divider barriers), effort + personal taste (stuff that’s pretty or smells really nice)

Climatic conditions are the limiting factor on plant choice. Within environmental confines the next step is asking yourself “Why am I growing a garden?”

Most answers to this can broadly be broken down into 3 somewhat overlapping categories.

For aesthetics? For food? For wildlife? 

This will then help dictate your plant choices. Want food? Plant edible species. Want wildlife? Plant local natives. Want aesthetics? Plant landscape cultivars.

Then overlay how much time and effort you’re willing to put into it. Lots of time? Annual bedding plants or annual veggies. Time poor? Perennial shrubs or fruit trees.

But for the actual layout of your garden (which plant goes where) it always pays to put together a landscape plan, even if it’s just hand drawn. Thinking about where
The sun reaches at winter and summer solstice, where gets wet and where stays dry, etc

Lastly (imo the best part) you need to learn about the plants and their tolerances to put it in the right spot & know how to care for it.
