The first goalie to wear a full-time face guard was Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadiens. On November 1, 1959, during a game, a puck injured a player's nose and cheek. The injury was quickly patched up. But Jacques continued the meeting wearing a brutal fiberglass training mask that covered his entire face, leaving slits for his eyes and nose. The player thought about his safety, although the coach and the stands were outraged. Jacques was called a coward. But over time everyone calmed down. It’s just that Plant, wearing his signature mask, didn’t lose 18 games in a row. This made the mask a kind of talisman in the eyes of the goalkeeper himself and everyone around him.
