almost everyone i talk to seems to use alchemy or some other hosted provider for the most part

Tried it for https://github.com/lfglabs/farcaster-indexer

Didn't love it - fun idea but dev UX is bad esp to go prod (confusing concept about curators, having to buy tokens to pay, etc.)
