One of my favourite things that songwriters do is the contrast between cheerful music and depressing lyrics. It tickles my brain and feels illegal 🤭

The perfect example of that is Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again (Naturally)". The wiki sums up the lyrics nicely, and boy are they grim: 

"In the first verse, the singer contemplates suicide after having been left at the altar; in the second, he wonders if there is a God; finally, he laments the death of his parents".

My other favourite example is "Turn my life down" by Jefferson Airplane. While the lyrics are a bit less grim and more poetic ("My yesterdays have melted with my tomorrow; And the present leaves me with no point of view") the contrast with the joyful music is very strong 🤤
