Exactly! When you realize how much reasearch and upgrading is done on the L1 to provide the best environment for the current and future layers, it is definitely worth the costs. 
Of course, the L2 teams are also contributing, but the joined effort is just making wonders!

I love the Scandinavian analogy. You pay your high taxes and cost of living, the rest is wonderfully solved for you.
