How Norman Rockwell Used Photographs to Create His Famous Paintings. At the beginning of his career, the artist used the services of close and professional models, but over time he decided that this method hindered the development of a naturalistic style. Then, in the late 1930s, Rockwell began to develop his own approach to illustration. To create paintings, most of which became magazine covers, he turned to photography. Before the photo shoot, the artist showed the sketch to the models, explaining how and where it was best to stand, how to hold their hands, what emotions to convey. Since most of the models were not professionals, but simply acquaintances or neighbors of the artist, Norman did not demand too much from them. However, he always took this stage of the work seriously and sought to embody his ideas into reality as accurately as possible.
