notifications being on that other tab made me miss so much on my own channels and the ones I have notifs for.

What notifications are you missing most? Why don't you check the other tab (since it has an unread dot)?

it even took me a couple of weeks to even realize the channel notifs have their own tab and that's why i'm not seeing naything channel related
