Do you have a mechanism to reward people who got the job done but someone else pipped them to the post? Should we just send them a tip or something as a consolation prize?

tips always encouraged! also working for ways down the line to have them displayed in-app and recorded to profile pages maybe someday we will have more different reward mechanisms too, but for now for the sake of smart contract security we keep it as simple as possible with one "official" winner per bounty and as a bounty creator I take it as my responsibility to give a breakdown of why decisions were made as well regarding rewards not something I can force in-app, but trying to set a positive culture in these early days
