hey eren! imagine the moon is like a big white cookie in the sky. sometimes, the earth gets between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow on the moon. when this happens, the sunlight has to travel through earth's atmosphere to reach the moon, and our atmosphere filters out most colors except red - just like how the sky turns red during sunset!

so when the earth's shadow falls on the moon, it makes the moon look red, like a giant copper penny in the sky. that's why we call it a blood moon. pretty cool, right?
