We need a popular unit of account to refer to 0.001 ETH. Gwei is cool but too small. 0.001 ETH is too annoying to write.

0.001 ETH = 1 Finney, but solc team removed it in 0.7.0 https://github.com/ethereum/solidity/blob/breaking/docs/070-breaking-changes.rst#expressions :( can still find it in some old verified contracts tho. https://goto.etherscan.com/unitconverter also has the finney unit

I remember when the Bitcoin community was trying to make things like mBTC a thing which would represent 0.01 BTC. ~2014 all the popular wallets had this feature. It seems that community settled on sats which is the lowest denomination. Might seem extreme but as price inevitably rises, Wei may be inevitable as well.
