Can we keep the American spirit of rebellious freedom alive so we can have nice things without sliding into authoritarianism?

Sometimes when I self reflect I find myself preferring authoritarianism because I believe people have so abandoned the responsibilities that come with freedom we have no other choice. Americans will not be responsible to others in society whether that’s obeying a red light, not littering or a litany of other things. I don’t see how you fix it.
