“The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) argued that confiscating $50,000 from a small business did not infringe the business' right to private property because money is not property.” Well that’s news to me https://reason.com/2025/01/31/the-government-says-money-isnt-property-so-it-can-take-yours/ Everyone is a corrupt loser frfr

IDK man is this like really news? Civil Forfeiture doesn't imply you can't own anything. Same thing here, if you do specific violation of the law and get found guilty they can seize assets. This just feels deliberately incendiary to get clicks TBH. Feel free to read the actual ruling here if anyone wants to: https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.dcd.255899/gov.uscourts.dcd.255899.18.0.pdf

I don’t think they should be able to do any of that, though

That's fair but what can we really do to take action to improve the situation?

Well, awareness is the first step. And then you can decide what you want to do. Have quite a few options

Right but the issues around civil forfeiture have been known for years and nothing has been done and yes this is a first step but a lot of the kind of thing doesn't go anywhere after the first step because the actions that are required aren't really something that most of the people reading the article want to / can engage with. Rather the end result of articles like this generally ends up being a continuing cycle of despair, inaction, and kind of "learned helplessness" of the general population so when something that actually has an impact in their lives they feel like they can't do anything about it. The reality is most people won't ever tangibly interact with this part of the legal system, especially because this case concerns hiring h2-b workers. Sorry to go on a bit of tirade, it just feels like everyone is focusing on stuff that they can't or don't have agency in and its kinda driving me nuts.
