Watching my industry tell me all citizens need to earn their birthright with GitHub stars in a global competition, and oh by the way Americans are trash has been illuminating

“You can’t do a leetcode hard? Doesn’t matter you come from three generations of veterans that protected the freedoms I’m coming here to take. You don’t deserve to be here like I do” type rhetoric enrages me, despite coming into this debate being convinced of the value of skilled immigration

If I’m seeing tweets from loomer and coulter and thinking “good points” the world is upside down. But also — the entertainment value of watching leopards eating faces can not be underestimated.🍿

I am struggling to navigate this myself as I on the face agree - I want America to be a vacuum for the world’s global talent! I want to win! — but the rhetoric has basically backed me into a corner where to say I want that also feels like I can’t want that without trashing concepts like heritage, legacy, the importance of place

Same! Yes, we absolutely want to attract the best talent and also this country and most successful businesses in it were built by immigrants. But also — there are clearly abuses of the system. And yes, we have educational challenges that are exacerbated by a decline in critical thinking (due to phones & now ai). The funniest thing is Trump hotels & country clubs have been hiring under H-2B visas for decades (as do all big hospitality seasonal businesses) for servers etc. These are low/mid skill, high paying jobs. And no one has mentioned that yet. But it’s exactly why he’s quiet on the subject. He totally agrees with the tech bros but knows he’ll have a hard time justifying it.
