By using NFTs isn’t Farcaster in essence including the use of ENS in its purple check verification process? I could use one of my ENS names for validation but the PFP would look boring:)

I was referring to the usernames specifically.. 
I agree with Chris that one needs global namespaces, but in a way, DNS/ENS is a global namespace.

The FND should be on top of ENS imho

I think it may be a little early to say ENS being the defacto name registry. Farcaster can merge its fname with ENS when things mature. I guess a separated name registry during early stage give them more flexibility and speed to develop the product (e.g. they can subsidize gas fee for users, ENS can’t)
