Had my best meal of 2025 so far at Casita Miramar last night in San Juan’s Miramar neighborhood. It’s owned by the family boricua family behind what was previously my favorite on the island — La Casita Blanca in Santurce. Puerto Rican staples like mofongo and alcapurrias are rightly famous — they’re so good. But people sleep on the fact they there’s an incredible movement down here of chefs who are trying to bring back local food and farming on a long-colonized island that depends on often low-grade and highly processed imports from the U.S. for upward of 84% of its calories.
