Lots of talk about this that it’s a “for thee not for me” thing 1. It may sound patrimonial but people saying yes in general but no for myself could just be correct… 2. …Because they’re identifying the stated wants of other people. If the people saying “I’d be better off in manufacturing” actually worked in manufacturing the industry would almost 10x

A point of comparison on the left might be liberals supporting higher wages for fast-food workers without ever wanting to flip burgers themselves.

I think this + @shantmm reply + @koolkheart.eth are all related. Agree in practice, but there’s a general positive vibe/nostalgia with “manufacturing” in the US vs fast food or other retail. Boomercons like manufacturing because it’s how they imagine their parents or uncle or something. The fast food analogy is more from pity/sympathy vs pride/aspiration. To @shantmm point there is a huge problem where people are incapable of understanding things as unique to a certain slice of the population. May not be a majority or even a plurality but it matters to them. This applies to @koolkheart.eth point…if you’re an online person who sees right wing people you probably see people who wouldn’t do it themselves but think it’s good. And the thing is they’re not wrong, they are correctly speaking on behalf of people who genuinely want these jobs
