Life Announcement: I've moved to Seattle! After 10 years in the bay area, my wife and I are trying out the greener/wetter northern tech hub. I grew up in Oregon so it's been really fun to be back in the northwest. If you're in the Seattle area, reach out — I'd love to meetup!

Now that we're settled, it's time to get serious about figuring out my post-Gatsby future.

I've been on a semi-sabbatical from work the last five months while wrapping up things with Netlify/Gatsby and moving. Gatsby was an amazing life-altering opportunity but it's been fantastic to have sufficient time to recover. Hard work distorts the soul and I needed time to snap back to my original shape.

So now I'm looking for my next big challenge. What questions are the most interesting to explore for the next 10 years? I've love to explore questions with you in advising, consulting type consultant roles — I'll be posting soon with more detail about what I'm looking for but feel free to DM to chat in the meantime

how do you visulalise the future of front-end development? There are interesting things becoming forefront like HTMX, WebAssembly, SolidJS, Astro 3.0 etc. Do you think we are over-engineering? How will you shape up a framework if you launch one today? Excited and looking forward to what you do next.

to me the only big innovation was React's component model — everyone else copied it and there's just been lots refinement since e.g. HTMX is just an effort to more properly componetize html. I don't think there's any innovation on the level of React on the horizon in the frontend.

I think the next big waves of innovation are around the RPCification of frameworks w/ Next.js/Remix pushing that way + local-first/sync engines doing away with APIs altogether for thick client apps.
