the torpedo bat is a pretty interesting case in messaging, finding early adoption, and virality within baseball. aaron leanhardt, the mit physicist, initially developed the torpedo bat in 2022 for the yankees. he originally pitched the bat as a way to cut down on strike outs and increasing contact. while available to all yankee minor leaguers, few adopted it. giancarlo stanton is most often mentioned as one of the earliest mlb adopters that saw success with it. during the postseason, he hit 7 homeruns in 14 games. this led to up to five yankee teammates adopting the torpedo bat this year and a power surge that broke multiple records for most homers by a team. now, the messaging is about increasing the number of barreled balls and maximizing the exit velocity of them. things that players and front offices track and value. while torpedo bats are viral, it took almost 3 years to catch on with players. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6243085/2025/03/31/mlb-torpedo-bats-players-intrigued/
