Torpedo Bat is a living testimony that innovation through a combination of  data, design, and science can happen in products that are even a century old. 

I have seen this before. My friend Ian Schon did this when he designed and made his Monoc nib. 

There are so many new ways to do old things, as long as one puts their mind to it! !

one of the coolest things about this new innovation is that some torpedo bats (which look more like bowling pins) are adjusted for hitting based on swing data. 

anthony volpe has a custom torpedo bat that places the barrel where he typically hits the ball on the bat. 

it’s also cool how this design optimizes a specific outcome (barreled ball) to increase the probability of a home run. the trade off of the design is a lower exit velocity on non-barreled balls, but that difference is negligible since it’s highly probably to be an out regardless.
