30 years ago my mom forgot to pick me up from the bus on my first day of kindergarten. 

Today, I’m 45min early to pick up my daughter from the same bus on her first day.

Definitely didn't mean to pass judgement on your mom, you can't summarize a relationship as complex as that with a single moment in time. I have so many of these regarding my parents and my relationship with my father (who I loved dearly) but these little things leave marks and our decisions to have them reflect our own experiences with our own say a little something. Namely that we want them to live a better version of what we have. Its truly joyous.
