The most advanced user interface for AR /XR headsets aren’t made by a Silicon Valley tech company. They are the F-35 HMDS (helmet mounted display system) they cost almost $500K and have 360 view of the entire aircraft. Each helmet is custom fitted for the pilot, with sensors, display etc It is an engineering marvel

“connected to six infrared cameras located around the aircraft, it provides a 360 view and situational awareness. If the pilot looks around in certain conditions, they don’t see the cockpit or their legs. All they see are their surrounding terrain, with flight critical & mission data projected inside the helmet.”

Writing a larger piece around how the market for AR/VR will likely always be enterprise and military. Everything else is essentially a loss leader for those markets since they can justify the price point and the tech can adapt to existing use cases.

it never fails to amaze me watching technology careening towards all of the science fiction I read as a kid.

These are wild! I saw somewhere a POV from the pilot. They can look through the jet with this.

Just wanted to add that usually, technologies transfer from military to civilian, so maybe one day we all will have such kind of helmets at home for deep VR

I wonder how much that $500K price tag could come down if someone like Elon took a hard, first-principles look at the cost of components and integration
