Being an outsider is actually one of the greatest advantages. 

No one remembers the faceless insider hordes. 

They remember the outliers.

I think the sweet spot is somewhere in between. Not too outsider that you have no clout to leverage and hard to break in to the in group and show results. But not too insider that you have too much to lose and would be busy clout chasing, and no hunger, nothing to prove

Napoleon was an outsider by birth, insider by education. He got the best military education one could get in late 18th century France at École militaire - and excelled in his education and eventual achievements starting with the Siege of Toulon in 1793
