Roman Republicans pre-Roman Empire distrusted Monarchy in the same way that cypherpunks and Bitcoin maximalists distrust centralized entities Dictatorships were temporary, existing only for crisis (see Cincinatus) - values for libertas (freedom) and res publicas (the public) were cherished, it was never a democracy

Interestingly the Roman’s got Caesar and then Augustus who played it smart publicly but had the same role And then it swapped to there needing to be one leader which ended almost 2000!!! Years later when the fren ch revolution slowly but surely kicked off what made Europe democracies

yeah, still there are some "republican" punks in europe.. fighting monarchies and centralization on all their forms (I may agree with them)
