my son planted cucumbers without telling anyone, and now we get a few of these every couple of weeks !!

i have so much to say about this it can fill a whole podcast 

tldr: he's been obsessed with gardening and seeds now for 6 months

he saves seeds from every fruit and vegetable and labels them w the name + date

he has his own drawer in the kitchen

he told me he was planting cherries but it turns out he planted a bunch of other things in the backyard 

the cukes were his biggest success!!

tyvm!! 

yeah we're super proud of him, and trying to help him be more creative 

tbh, i'd be lying if i said i supported it 100% from day 1.. i actually heard an inspiring speech from someone that totally changed my perspective on it, basically: "if your kid says they want to go to the moon, don't tell them all the challenges with that dream and reasons why it might not come true... teach them about space, introduce them to content about astronauts, help them understand the complexity and let them face the inevitable challenges themselves" 

it seems kind of obvious in hindsight but these parental anti-patterns are pretty tough to break

Sounds like you have a little gardener/farmer on your hands!! it makes me so happy to hear that he has the opportunity and freedoms to explore the earth and gardening and plants! Kudos to you and your partner for encouraging his passions and interests 👍
