if my family is going to NYC this summer and wants to do all the classic new york city tourist stuff - ellis island, empire state building, etc., where is the best location/place to stay? would prefer it be a hotel in a nice area

Yup and central to Empire State, Ellis island, freedom tower etc

tribeca is quiet place to stay with not big tourist foot traffic of other areas. close to west village for lots of shopping and food options. easy to walk places and lots of subway/bus transit options.

i'd avoid outer boros.
