Such was the fate of many aboard HMS Bellerophon, which had just helped defeat the French and Spanish fleets at Trafalgar. The tempest struck that night and lasted several days.

The above depiction of a vessel in heavy seas is most likely an Aivazovsky work from the latter half of the 19th century. Difficult to confirm given the over 6000 works he produced over his 60 year career – that’s an average of one painting about every four days.

As a combat medic veteran... One of my best friends did not one, but two combat deployments... Came home and passed in a car accident... Oh the perils of war and misfortune... I think of what's worse... Being taken out by the enemy or... Something like the story of yours, mine or the many more like it...
