Powerful idea. I think IRL /curta events have been close to this. The best hackathon I've done recently was Huffathon, fully community organized, not really sponsored. The very best do it for the love of the game and respect of their peers.

ETHBerlin has historically been quite good with this for main judging criteria. Görli won one year with just a few cli demos and a brief slide about why a new test network was needed.

We’ve (Pinata) gotten more respect hacking every year at ETHDenver than we ever have sponsoring anywhere else. But for individual devs/teams you’re probably right.
