Depends on the type of company and target customer profile? I remember when I worked at Jet.com that Marc Lore said the domain cost them a ton, but their user profiles were probably less familiar with alternative domain extensions, so it likely helped with trust + branding building. I'd guess for this, they maybe could have gone with a .co or .io domain extension at first, and then later double down if they find PMF.
