A short 2 and a half minute episode on why all social media sucks - and why you shouldn't get too attached to it. https://westenberg.transistor.fm/episodes/all-social-media-sucks

if some rando slides into your dm’s with a job offer—it’s 110% chance it’s a scam if they “require” you download and install some proprietary drainer utility—220% chance it’s a scam

AOC will save us / Pete will save us / Kamala will save us / Beyoncé will save us / Taylor Swift will save us / Robert Mueller will save us etc. Every year it’s a new progressive icon who will rally America. I don’t think it’s working.

At some point the left need to admit this whole "waiting for a savior" thing isn't a strategy. It's cope.

We’re living through what feels like a Protestant Reformation of social media. Each new platform — Threads, Mastodon, Bluesky, Post — is its own denomination, complete with distinct status games and hierarchies. You might be a cardinal on Mastodon and a peasant on Threads. https://www.joanwestenberg.com/the-cathedral-of-the-blue-bird/

You can be enlightened, stoic and at peace and still tell people to fuck off when they need to fuck off. It’s called balance.

The hard part is figuring out how to maintain enough shared context for meaningful discourse while embracing the benefits of platform pluralism. If history is any guide, this transition period is going to be messy, confusing, and occasionally (ahem) hostile. But hey, at least no one's getting burned at the stake this time. Yet.

Perhaps we're heading toward a similar future in our digital spaces – more chaotic and fragmented, but with more fertile ground for new ideas and ways of organizing.

The Protestant Reformation, for all its chaos, eventually led to religious pluralism and new forms of social organization. R. J. Yeatman and W. C. Sellar might have called it A Good Thing.
