The core insight is that free speech isn’t binary — it’s not “restricted” or “unrestricted.” It’s a complex system that requires careful mechanism design. We need to stop fighting yesterday’s battles and start building better speech institutions for tomorrow. https://www.joanwestenberg.com/the-left-and-right-are-both-wrong-about-free-speech/

free speech like free trade is great if you are culturally on top, not great if you are not.

someone had to say that.. thanks.. I am completely against the new modern censorship from the left.. but I also think that some kind of speech is not just free speech but a crime.. or could lead to someone doing the crime.. you said.. "Here’s a better framework: Speech should be restricted only when it causes direct, measurable harm that can’t be better addressed through other means." what kind or harm are we talking about? should the laws be centered around what is considered harm and what not? here, we have a law protecting minorities being targeted in social media.. ie there was some polemic created with fake news around immigrants under legal age... that ended with some real racist crimes.. the left wants protection on this.. but the police and fascist parties ended using it to protect themselves from critics and targeting people using real freedom of speech.. (the judges have the last vote on this and they are a bit right winged here..)
